Establishing Beekeeping Associations

A major obstacle for Renitantely beekeepers is market access. Demand for honey in rural communities is low. Many beekeepers may even sell their product by the spoonful to friends and neighbours at very low prices. Despite all project communities lying within 35 kilometres of the more lucrative urban market of Fort Dauphin, the capital of the Anosy region, poor infrastructure and prohibitive transport costs force rural community members to make the journey by foot, taking up to 12 hours. When the journey is made, inability to afford overnight stays results in an urgency to sell, again forcing prices down. In addition, many rural beekeepers operate individually, making it difficult to achieve the economies of scale that could be achieved by sharing the burden of transport costs.

To address this issue, SEED Madagascar has recently established Beekeeping Associations in each of the communities Project Renitantely works in. Each Association has held elections to appoint individuals to leadership positions, such as President, Secretary and Treasurer.

When the Associations are fully established and registered with local and regional authorities, SEED will also establish an overarching Beekeeping Cooperative. The local Beekeeping Associations and regional Beekeeping Cooperative will act as platforms to promote greater collaboration among the beekeepers and communities. They will be able to share costs, such as the transport of honey and wax to larger markets, and strengthen their negotiating position. Cooperative members will receive marketing and entrepreneurial training. The Cooperativewill serve as the foundation on which to build a product brand, which will be positioned as a quality brand with premium pricing.

Beekeeping Associations will facilitate the distribution of essential beekeeping tools and materials to beneficiaries. Beekeeping technicians will be better able to administer training, so that project beneficiaries can master skills such as hive building, capturing swarms, and maintaining healthy hives.
