Making the school a better place for the children

By Radhika Arvindam | Trustee

New Building
New Building

For the months July-Sept 2015, Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) has made significant strides in completing the task of upgrading the resources at the Government school adopted by us so that many more children from the urban slums of Bangalore can get a better education in a well-equipped and functional school.

Improving the Infrastructure  at the school

  • The new well-ventilated kitchen which ACT has built will serve multiple purposes. It will be used as a kitchen for heating milk and making porridge from the healthy protein-jaggery mix provided by ACT for the school children every day when they come to school every morning. In the afternoons, the government provided mid-day meals will be kept in the new clean kitchen and served to the children. Most of the children who come to this school are malnourished and do not get proper food at home. So we have provided the infrastructure for the future generations of children to eat healthy food.
  • We have built  stone ledges which will serve as seating for the children to have lunch  under the many trees in the grounds

Activities at the school

  • ACT has planted saplings of fruit, vegetables and flowering trees throughout the year. We have had a good crop of papayas, vegetables and green leafy vegetables.
  • The school celebrated Independence day on 15th August.
  • A van has been organized to pick up children from the nearby slums so that more children come to school to get an education and become self reliant.

Volunteering Activities

The school reopened on 1st June, and ACT volunteers are back to assist the teachers and students with their academic work,

  • 4 French Nationals interned with our trust and worked with the children of the Government school for 4 weeks They taught them how to make chart and speak in english, Mathematics and English Raeding and Vocubulary. .
  • Volunteers of the trust continue to have special English classes for the children which included reading and vocabulary.
