Challenge

Diphtheria is spreading across Kano State, leaving children sick and families afraid of losing their loved ones. Children are arriving at health facilities with fever, sore throat, swollen neck and breathing difficulties, while deaths continue to be reported. The outbreak has affected communities across all 44 local government areas of the state. Delayed treatment, vaccine unavailability and shortages of frontline workers are putting more children at risk of dying from this preventable disease.

Solution

This project will deploy medical teams to affected communities across Kano State. Our doctors, nurses and community health workers will conduct door-to-door screening, vaccinate children, identify suspected cases early, provide treatment and refer severe cases for further treatment. We will provide medicines and protective supplies to frontline workers and donate printed materials to the Kano State Ministry of Health to educate families about symptoms, prevention and when to seek medical attention.

Long-Term Impact

The project will help reduce diphtheria infections and deaths among children in Kano while increasing vaccination coverage in affected communities. Door-to-door screening and education will help families recognize symptoms earlier and seek treatment before complications develop. Supporting frontline workers with supplies will improve their ability to respond to suspected cases. In the long term, more vaccinated children and better community awareness can reduce the risk of future outbreaks.
