Dear Donors,
A child should not lose their life to a disease that vaccination can prevent.
Yet diphtheria continues to threaten children in Nigeria. The disease can begin with symptoms such as fever and sore throat and may progress to swelling of the neck and difficulty breathing. Without timely medical care, it can become life-threatening.
Kano has been at the centre of Nigeria's diphtheria outbreak. NCDC data has documented thousands of confirmed cases in the state since the outbreak began, with children carrying much of the burden. Low vaccination coverage has been one of the factors associated with the spread of the disease.
Diphtheria is preventable through vaccination. This makes every child who has missed routine immunisation an important reason to keep working.
This project, "Save Children from Nigeria's Diphtheria Outbreak", was created to support children and families in communities where access to vaccination, early screening and medical care may be limited.
This project is only six days old, and we are still at the beginning of our $100,000 fundraising goal. We have not yet received our first donation, but we believe it is important to keep drawing attention to children who remain at risk.
Our planned activities include community screening, vaccination support, early identification of suspected cases, referral for treatment, health information for families, and medical and protective supplies for frontline workers.
We also plan to support door-to-door health education so parents and caregivers can recognise warning signs and know when to seek medical attention. Children who have missed routine vaccination will be among those we hope to reach.
For those already responding to diphtheria across Nigeria. Big thank you!
Our work is just beginning, and we need people willing to stand with these children.
If this appeal speaks to you, please share the project with your friends, family, colleagues and social media community. You can also become an individual fundraiser on and invite people you know to support the project.
We look forward to sharing further reports as funds are received and activities begin.
No child should die because a preventable disease reached them before protection did.
With gratitude,
Adaego Imoh
