Help relocate 10 zebra in South Africa

Dear friends,

We would like to thank you all for your most valuable support for both our Emergency Medical Fund and for the relocation of zebra.

A few days ago our wildebeest “short -Tail” was found to be limping. His front foot was badly swollen. With your support, we have been able to medicate him and prevent dreadful suffering. Short-Tail cares for a young bull that he has “taken under his wing” Franky and Short Tail are always together and their favorite place to lie is outside our workshop under the shade. Without out your help, we would not have been able to afford the treatment and the suffering he would have had to endure is unthinkable. Thank you!

Ideally, we would have Short Tail in a Boma but we still need support to build the long-awaited stables and secure medical Boma. Please do consider ongoing support by becoming a repeat sponsor. We would also like to report about the 2 zebra that we await. With the extreme heat, we have been advised to hold till the weather cools, before we transfer them to Suni-Ridge. Furthermore this season a little darling wildebeest was born. We nursed her mother during her pregnancy with extra food (going out to her a 10 pm each night when she seemed to be alone and able to get all the wildlife pellets and extra hay without other wildlife, the zebra and the wildebeest herd interfering) Her baby was born in December and we have named the little girl “Flower Patch” This little wildebeest, loves the zebra and often grazes with them during the day. In the evening they “return” her to her mother and the territorial bull where and she stays with her herd during the night time! It's a fascinating relationship! As our zebra, Stripy and Tammy do not have their own young, they seem to have adopted her and watch over her for her mother. It has been best to wait not only for the cooler weather but for Flower Patch to mature so that she would not be at any risk with the new zebra.

We would like to send you a final thank you for being part of our work and supporting our efforts to relocate zebra. As mentioned in our last report, we are now able to relocate 2 zebra to a forever safe home in our Sanctuary where we now have wonderful green grazing after the lovely rains.  

The others that we hoped to also move to safety are no longer available and we are therefore deactivating the project - we will, however, continue to keep you updated and send you photos of the offloading of the 2 friends for Stipy and Tammy. 

GlobalGiving has encouraged us to continue to reach out to ensure that our work with wild spaces and specifically with wildlife is optimized.  Top of our list is to ensure that any injured wildlife is cared for to prevent suffering and we will be telling you more about our efforts to ensure that emergency veterinary treatment is always available for wildlife both in and around our Sanctuary.
