Life Saving Treatment to Children in Rural India

In Undithal, on the fourteenth of every month, Seva Mandir conducts an immunization camp, which is attended by many women who seek reliable health services for their children. These immunization camps are overseen by a nurse, as well as a Seva Mandir trained Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) and Balsakhi (Child’s Friend). These community health workers counsel families on the importance of immunizations, as well as motivate women to come to camps to receive antenatal checkups and treatments for common illnesses. Seva Mandir’s TBAs and Balsakhis do far more than simply counsel though: they actively help. After a Balsakhi encountered the two month old infant, Mangi, who only weighed 1.5 kilograms, the Balsakhi not only helped the mother understand the importance of proper breastfeeding practices, but also encouraged the mother to have her child immunized. The mother was hesitant to attend the immunization camp because she thought she would have to travel too far to reach it, but after the Balsakhi explained that the camp was conducted in the village itself, the mother agreed to go.

Upon reaching the camp, the immunization team spoke at length with the mother to ensure she understood the importance of each shot, and the potentially deadly diseases each vaccine saves her child from. Our teams provide this type of pre-immunization counseling to help eliminate misconceptions related to immunizations.  As a result, families come to immunization camps more regularly.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your generous support to our immunization program. With your support, Seva Mandir organized free health checkups cum immunization camp in Dabban village in Udaipur district. In this village, it takes more than one hour to reach the nearest health facility by public transport, which is also not very frequent. Therefore, the people rely on home remedies, traditional healers or quacks for treatment and go for qualified care only when the condition deteriorates.

The camp was conducted by a senior Pediatrician, a General Nurse Midwife (GNM) and a senior gynecologist who also heads the health program of Seva Mandir. The camp catered to 139 children (up to 12 years) with treatment for common illnesses and 12 children (up to 1 year) received vaccine shots.
