Computer Classes for Girls

Computer skills are highly valued and of interest to the students at the Professor Sakena Yacoobi Private Schools. Once again, AIL supported female students from the private school in Herat are taking part in the girls only, Technovation Challenge contest. This contest is international in nature and groups of young people work in teams to develop apps to solve real world problems. Last year, the team from PSYPS gained first place in Afghanistan and entered the semi- final round with teams from all over the world.

AIL has purchased 3 PCs specifically for this year’s project and 3 staff are guiding students in their work. The team consists of 12 students and 2 mentors. The team is currently broken down into 3 smaller groups divided according to skill and interest level and age so there are 2 junior teams and 1 senior. The AIL mentors are teaching the girls how to build apps and the groups are researching a problem in society that can be addressed through an app. This class gives the girls experience in real world problem solving, critical and logical thinking, leadership, team work and computer coding. At the time of the contest they will also learn how to make an oral presentation and put together a power point slide show. The girls have commented on how much they enjoy this class, “We are happy to have this opportunity to work on creating an app that could help people improve their lives or improve society in some way.”

As the year draws to a close, we want to thank you for your support in 2017. Your donations have helped many women and girls gain education and improve their lives. Thank you for being a part of this!

Stories are the best way for us to show how you have helped poor Afghans improve their lives and communities. Here is one of our favorites from this year. A student said, "In my opinion the first and best thing that youth need to do is to transform ourselves and then to transform the community. This way we will be able to motivate society and our country toward development and a more prosperous future.

Everybody needs knowledge and perception in order to have a good life. We have learned that studying and reading books is “a light in the path of life”. Our countrymen spend less time on reading and studying useful topics than people in developed countries. This is one of the common reasons why our people lack academic awareness. Our teacher tells us that a society develops when its people develop two habits, exercise and reading books. In this class we understand the purpose of reading books. Every month we read, summarize and present one book in front of the class. We have been doing this for a year. Now reading has become one of our daily habits. If I don't read some pages during the day, I feel like I have lost something."

1073 Save Rural Afghan Women and Children with Healthcare

1155 Fast-Tracking Education for Afghan Women and Girls

This project follows women and girl students through their academic careers supporting those who need it at the secondary school level and the same students or others who need help in the college years. The school age children are excited to receive a scholarship as this ensures another year for them at a school they love.

The Professor Yacoobi Private School in Herat is recognized as one of the best in the city. Academic standards are high and there are many supplemental and extra curricula activities on offer. One special class is the 30 student two year Leadership Course. Last month this class studied democracy and its impact in the development of society. The topics included: pillars of good government, free and independent media, military relations and rights and responsibilities. A lawyer from the Afghan Institute of Learning’s Legal Aid Clinic came to the school and held a workshop for the Leadership Course students. The topics covered included: what is law, amending laws, know the law and prevention of law breaking. Students commented saying, “I enjoyed the workshop and learned a lot and how it is important to know about the laws and especially citizenship laws.”
