Summary

Victims of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and urban poverty, orphans and vulnerable children are nurtured by The Other Side Foundation School through a Values based Education, a nutritious meal and basic healthcare. Our bursary program helps further their secondary education in government schools. Single mothers and widows of our students are up skilled through evening adult education classes and tailoring workshops. Challenge

Unemployment, overcrowded community schools with 80 or more pupils in a class and poor infrastructure remain a significant challenge in Zambian communities that are struggling with an ever-increasing population in unplanned settlements. The problem has been compounded by the HIV-AIDS epidemic that has left a staggering 1.4 million orphans: resulting in street kids, or cared for by elderly grandparents who have no source of income, or they become heads of a family at a tender young age.

Solution

Our Values-Based Primary Schooling fosters a solid foundation for these rudderless orphans and vulnerable children. The Food and Healthcare Programs at school enable these children to have at least one meal a day and have access to medical care. Our Bursary Program ensures higher learning and the provision of Vocational Training for our academically challenged students, widows and single mothers promotes entrepreneurship and self sufficiency, empowering the community as a whole.

Long-Term Impact

Since inception 6,000 children received primary school education, with 500 children sponsored to secondary schools. We served over 1,000,100 free meals. In continuous support of the UN MD Goals and our objectives, our project empowers the marginalized in Zambia through education, nutrition, and healthcare; with an attitude of gratitude fostered towards all so that the children and their caregivers will be a force for a long term change not just within their community but also their nation.
