Impact of Cholera on the Marginalised

When an epidemic comes unannounced, regardless of what is lying along its path, it razes anything and everything that crosses its path ! Thus was the result of the recent Cholera epidemic that hit Zambia. About 21 000 people were affected by the outbreak and over 700 died of the pandemic. As always the ones impacted severely are the less privileged living in shanty towns and impoverished areas where hygene and water related diseases is a daily struggle.

In George Compound, Matero township in the outskirts of the capital Lusaka, where our school is situated to serve these households living in extreme poverty, were severely impacted. Most adults living here are casual workers earning less than a dollar a day to feed their families. Some of our students either lost their parents or guardians to this epidemic or were themselves infected. A student of TOSF School for OVC is now the head of his family as he has lost his parents because of the epidemic.

Our emergency outreach intervention was limited to just 30 “poorest of the poor” families of our students, due to TOSF’s financial restraints as we are not an income generating school and have limited funds. A donor who wishes to remain anonymous donated to provide emergency rations.

Gratitude for year ending in 2023

Another year of accomplishments, learning, challenges and sharing. We are indeed grateful to all our sponsors, donors and partners for another year which has impacted the lives of our orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). No words can describe, how your perpetual support and trust in our grassroots outeach program, has uplifted the daily living standards of our students and even their aged grandmothers who are their guardians and/or their widowed and single mothers.

Being the season of giving and sharing, as for the past 17 years, The Other Side Foundation has always hosted a Christmas party for the OVC and this year (as from time to time) we were able to invite the most needy grandmothers to join us in the feast. Much needed brand new school shoes was given as prizes for the first and runner up student of each grade. Most of our students either come barefoot or with open slippers to school during cold winters in Zambia. What better way to reward their hardwork for the academic year ending 2023. The other children get second hand used shoes, if we are able to source locally. Much needed brand new school bags were donated and distributed to the poorest of the poor among our students.

The founder and executive directors also took this opportunity to meet with the parents during the last PTA meeting for the year.
