Summary

Orphans being raised by extended family members often face a simple barrier to getting an education: being able to afford basic supplies such as backpacks, notebooks and uniforms. This project will identify to up to 100 orphans in Vilankulo whose caretakers face extreme poverty. Our social worker will give each selected orphan a backpack full of all the supplies they need to be able to enroll in school. Follow-up visits will help confirm that they are able to stay in school.

Challenge

Many children in Mozambique grow up without their parents. For some, one or both parents have died. For others, their parents' own challenges caused them to be left with a relatives. When out-of-work aunties and grandmothers to take on additional children, they often can't afford basic school supplies. When this is the case, children can grow up without schooling, putting them at risk of getting trapped in poverty. We have reached many orphans in past with SAKs kits but the need great.

Solution

ParCo social workers perform due diligence to encounter the children that are most at risk of missing out on school due of their caretakers' poverty. These children are given new or gently used durable backpacks to last several years. They are also given school uniforms, notebooks and pencils, washing powder and shoes or other essentials depending on the requirements for attendance at their particular public primary school. Our current goal is 100 kits for the 2024 school year.

Long-Term Impact

Once the back is full of supplies, we call it a "school access kit." For an orphan, this kit means the difference between enrolling in school or losing out on an education. The orphans that we reach with kits and monitoring have a much better chance of earning a decent wage and having a life of dignity as adults over the long term. They are less likely to get trapped in poverty even though they didn't get to grow up with their parents. It is better the community too when everyone goes to school.
