Community adjusts to rainfall changes

By Heather Heckel | Executive Director

Water source for an estimated 5,000 people.
Water source for an estimated 5,000 people.

As a community-based organization, we rely on our partners to plan and implement their projects. This gives them flexibility to use local knowledge and needs to adjust programming, which is increasingly important for climate resilience.

This year, the rains were delayed in our nine partner villages and water resources were severely constrained, with multiple communities having to share one dam (pond) and to reduce water consumption to one gallon per person per day (see photo). With water scarcity and extremely high temperatures (110 degrees), our partners postponed tree planting until regular rain began. Then, they prioritized plowing the fields of the 30 women farmers in our farming program because food security is a regional priority.

We now hope to conduct the school and women's farm tree planting in late July. In the meantime, the local nursery, run by community-based organization - Teepalig - has been growing the indigenous and fruit trees that will be planted (see photo).

We look forward to updating you on the planting and caretaking of trees soon.
