GENDER AND WOMEN'S HUMAN RIGHTS

By Mariana Concha | Project Coordinator

The Fundación Tiempo de Juego is currently working and gaining a more profound understanding of gender and women’s human rights issues that affect girls and young women in Cazuca, Colombia.

Presently the organization sees the following as pressing and critical objectives:

a. Empowering girls and young women to address the dynamics of violence in their community through a psychosocial support based on the implementation of protective factors identified and relevant to the context.

b. Develop strategies for girls and young women to become active agents of promoting peace and nonviolence cultures in their community.

c. Link and generate participation of girls and young women in groups, collectives and networks that advocate for the fulfillment of women's human rights in armed conflict scenarios.

d. Empowering girls and young women as active agents of reflection and transformation of their community in terms of gender barriers.

To fulfill this commitment Tiempo de Juego has been working to institutionalize a gender approach, both internally and in working with beneficiaries to ensure that both women and men have equal opportunities to develop their skills and the ability to participate in the decision-making processes that affect their lives.

With said objective in mind Tiempo de Juego has joined efforts with Women Win- an organization that equips adolescent girls to exercise their right s through sports -

Formalizing a new gender issue service units, Women Win, managed by tiempo de Juego that began its workshops for 60 girls and young women last September, addressing the issues proposed in the Goal workbook. The programs have been well received among teenagers in the district 4 of Soacha (Altos de Cazucá), who since last September 14 attend workshops pertaining to various topics that emerge from their daily lives and that are specific to women of their age.

Some of the attendees were long time participants of the sports activities offered by the Fundación Tiempo de Juego, especially soccer school, but in March of this year, after the visit of the representative of the Women Win organization we have ratified the importance of linking all of our workshops to physical activity, so as to have sport compliment the methodological sessions. In the near future girls and young women will be taking part in Zumba classes. Participants are receptive and committed to continuing this process, as they find that this activity is a healthy way to channel their energy and strengthen their bodies and emotions.

The Foundation is also participating in workshops that aim to reflect on Women’s Human Rights and Gender issues. Members of the staff   have actively participated in four academic and experience based workshops that have challenged us both at a personal level as well as in terms of our work by promoting a better understanding of how we undertake the responsibility and aim to better women lives.

The Fundación Tiempo de Juego will now undertake the challenge of participating in an investigative participative action assessment of its activities.
