In many parts of Tanzania, there are no eye clinics, leaving many functionally blind with lost potential. This project brings mobile eye teams into underserved areas to screen villagers and provide glasses to those in need. The cost isn't in the glasses; it's in reaching the remote villages to make sure no one is left behind. And every trip does more than restore sight. It trains the next generation of Tanzanian eye care professionals-ensuring this care continues long after we leave.
Tanzania has one of the highest vision loss rates in the region-13.8%, double that of its neighbors. Over 8.2 million people live with vision loss, yet there are fewer than 2 ophthalmologists per million. Rural areas have no access to care. Most cases are treatable, yet lives remain limited by poor sight. Vision loss deepens poverty-in a country where 49% already live in extreme poverty-and keeps people from school, work, and independence.
This project brings mobile eye teams to underserved areas to screen 300 people and provide glasses to those in need. Each trip also trains Tanzanian eye care professionals-building skills, confidence, and access that lasts. By restoring sight today and strengthening the workforce for tomorrow, we help individuals reclaim opportunities and communities gain long-term, locally led vision care.
This project will restore sight for 300 people-helping them return to school, work, and caregiving. Clear vision empowers individuals, strengthens families, and lifts entire communities. At the same time, each outreach trains Tanzanian eye care professionals, building a stronger, more sustainable national system for the future.
