In July, Eye Corps supported a locally-led outreach to six villages in the Tunduru District of Ruvuma Region. As part of this effort, 75 people were screened under this project, and those who needed glasses received them—restoring clarity and dignity to their daily lives.
In total, over 400 people were screened over the course of 5 days, having received preventative eye care not readily available in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Eye Corps-trained ophthalmic staff worked using portable eye charts and simple diagnostics to provide care to those in need. Some were fitted for glasses, peering down at a piece of paper realizing they can see the small print for the first time in a long while. Others were evaluated and referred for sight saving cataract surgery.
Thanks to your support, we are steadily making progress. With your continued help, we plan to return in September to a new region, bringing screenings and glasses to dozens more who still lack access to even the most basic vision care.
