Today, we again have good news to share. Together with other environmental NGOs and activists, we have spent years advocating for a hatchery for leatherback sea turtles in Suriname. As part of a regional action plan for the species, we believed the plan would be incomplete without provisions for hatcheries, so we pushed hard to have them included. This mattered because the nesting grounds at Braamspunt are eroding, condemning many nests to be lost, and the best solution was a real hatchery: one staffed and supervised around the clock. We're thrilled to say that advocacy has paid off. The hatchery now exists, is supervised 24/7, and is run jointly by a government agency and an international NGO.
Meanwhile, we've continued supporting Stidunal, an Indigenous organization working on the eastern coast at the Galibi Beaches. We helped them draft a proposal to continue their sea turtle monitoring work in their territory, submitted to a small-grants donor who had approached them directly. We're keeping our fingers crossed for them. Galibi is also the village we visit every year during the holidays for educational activities with local children, work made possible by your generous donations.
We also completed a sea turtle knowledge gap analysis, giving interns and volunteers a clearer picture of the projects, internships, and thesis topics that could help advance sea turtle conservation in Suriname.
Alongside our ongoing work to reduce pollution, especially plastic, which poses a serious threat to sea turtles, we've kept busy with many smaller efforts, always in partnership with other organizations.
There is hope! And with your continued support, we can keep creating more of it, for every sea turtle hatchling that makes it out of the nest and back into the sea.
