The turtles are about to arrive and your help is essential!

By Francisco Delgado | Executive Director

Starting June 1, our team will arrive at the Playa Hermosa-Punta Mala Wildlife Refuge, to prepare for the start of the 2024 nesting season.

We need your financial support to cover the costs of 2 staff members so we could clean and expand the nursery, clean the beach so turtles don’t face obstacles, and do everything else to prepare before first turtles arrive in July . We also need to purchase gloves and construction materials to improve the nursery, as well to replace equipment such as backpacks, flashlights and battery chargers.

This project is vital to protect the population of sea turtles that nest in the Refuge.

GlobalGiving donations represent 60% of the project's funding.

Do you know why sea turtle conservation projects are so important?

You've probably heard that only 1 in every 1,000 sea turtle eggs become adults, but did you know that sea turtle conservation projects can increase that probability 10 times, to 1 in every 100 eggs?

How is it possible?

Typically, only 1 in 10 eggs hatch in the wild. This is because crabs, dogs, raccoons, and coatis eat the eggs in the nest, and after they hatch, the birds eat them on their first trip to the ocean. That's if humans don't poach the entire nest first.

Additionally, one of the big challenges we face at the Punta Mala Wildlife Refuge is the loss of the beach due to rising tides, which results in 90% of the nests being lost when washed away.

Sea turtle conservation projects like the one we have at the Playa Hermosa-Punta Mala Wildlife Refuge, eliminate many threats by relocating the eggs to a hatchery, where they are protected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and then, they are released into the ocean as soon as they hatch. Other activities include constant beach cleaning to prevent obstacles from interfering with the nesting process.

By removing all threats until the hatchlings reach the sea, we are giving them a better chance to reach adulthood and reproduce, which is key to the survival of the species. By doing this, experts think their chances improve from 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 100.

And why sea turtles?

Sea turtles are an “umbrella species,” meaning they are an important part of their environment and influence other species around them. If an umbrella species is removed from a habitat, the natural order can be disrupted, affecting other species.

That is why supporting these efforts is so important, together we are trying to give sea turtles, and all species that depend on them, a better chance to survive and thrive.

We hope to count on your support once again. We greatly appreciate your trust.
