Second Harvest's Food Rescue Program aims to rescue 75.4 million pounds of primarily perishable, nutrient-dense, surplus food across the Canadian supply chain in 2024. In collaboration with more than 7,500 food donors, the program seeks to redistribute this food to over 14,000 charitable food programs, reaching 4.3 million individuals experiencing food insecurity. At the same time, millions of pounds of harmful greenhouse gas emissions will be prevented from polluting our shared environment.
6.9 million Canadians are food insecure, but there is enough food to go around. We don't have a food shortage problem; we have a loss, recovery and distribution problem. 58% of food produced for Canada is wasted every year. That's equivalent to $49 billion, enough food to feed every person living in Canada for nearly five months, or end hunger in our country. By diverting food from landfills we are not only feeding people, we also have a positive impact on the environment.
Our mission is to grow an efficient food recovery network to fuel people and reduce the environmental impacts of food waste. We work across the supply chain from farm to retail to capture surplus food before it ends up in landfills and has the chance to negatively impact our environment. This food is then redistributed to a vast network of nonprofits across Canada, who use it to nourish people experiencing hunger through a diverse array of charitable food programs.
Second Harvest will reach more then 4.8 million Canadians, who will receive nourishing food through our programs. Our project will rescue more then 74.4 million pounds of food and redistribute to our network of more then 14,000+ food programs supported through more then 4,400 non-profit organizations. By rescuing and redistributing this amount of food, not only are we helping to nourish people experiencing hunger, but 241 million pounds of GHGs will be averted from the atmosphere as well.
