This project will enhance the capacity of rural women and smallholder farmers in Nigeria to end hunger, poverty and curb land degradation. We are teaching them how to regenerate their land resources, helping them plant and grow fruit (economic) trees, crops and vegetables for a sustainable livelihood.Seed to Wealth trains and empowers 25 beneficiaries in each selected community/corporative on sustainable land management, seedlings, beekeeping and alternative skills for enhanced economy and nature
Land degradation amplified by climate change and human errors affect the quality and quantity of agriculture production due to lack of access to infrastructure and basic technical knowledge. This experience is one of the reasons more forest resources are degraded as many farmers, especially women, abandon farming due to poor harvest and continue to deplete the little available forest resources. Women who go far into the bush to find fuel face the risk of being sexually assaulted.
The Seed to Wealth provides technical support, volunteer agroforestry extension workers, seedling, improved crop varieties, livestock, alternative skills, and startup packages for each beneficiary. During the project period, women will receive help to establish boundary planting of fast-growing leguminous shrubs to boost soil fertility. This will also give them a ready supply of firewood, reducing the need to go far into the bush to find fuel and the risk of being sexually assaulted
The project will train and empower five rural women, including smallholder farmers, in each benefiting community. They will be equipped to become better managers of their natural resources and wealth creators and reduce soil degradation, enhance agrobiodiversity while mitigating climate change. It will also contribute to reaching Nigeria's land degradation neutrality targets and national policy to plant 4million trees by 2030.
