Following on from our latest report we are delighted to announce that a total of six boreholes (wells) are currently being installed in schools and communities. Besides the three previously mentioned for Muyundu, Luzila and Nakawa a pre-school a further three have been donated to Zalu and Mayobo Schools and most recently for Mukalahani Village.
The difference this makes is enormous - no longer will people have to draw water from polluted stream and shallow wells, nor have to walk long distances. Children will be healthier, and time will be saved.
A source of safe drinking water can transform lives, the number of diarrhoeal cases will be significantly reduced, and will reduce the risk of fatalities in infants. For schools it prevents the spread of disease amongst the pupils.
As the winter ends the land, after no rain falling since April, becomes parched and streams and small rivers become dry. Searching for water becomes a bigger chore and in some cases the distance to the nearest water source can be two to three miles.
In the coming months people will be preparing the land for planting. Schools that have boreholes can create a garden to grown vegetables and maize, the staple diet of Zambians. A school feeding programme is invaluable, most especially for children who live in outreach areas or for those who come from extremely poor families where food is in short supply. Though the World Food Programme offers breakfast food, this can be intermittent and in some years the schools receive only enough food for one out of three terms.
The Butterfly Tree is committed to sourcing more schools and communities that do not have a source of safe drinking water. We are now working in five Chiefdoms in the Southern Province of Zambia, covering a radius of 200 miles as welll as working nationally on an advanced malaria prevention programme. Your support has enabled us to do this!
