Summary

Violent armed conflict in Syria has caused millions of Syrians to flee to other parts of Syria and to neighboring countries, creating a humanitarian crisis in which food is a top priority. With our Partner Organization Karam Foundation, SPI is establishing vegetable gardening projects for internally displaced refugee to produce their own food. The project will ship a pallet, which is about 30 cartons, or in total 42,000 packets. This grows 150 tons of food or more = 1.5 million vegetable serving

Challenge

There are 9 million internal refugees inside Syria, an estimated 6 million receive food rations from the World Food Program. With international funding drying up for this international program, Syrians face an impending disaster. From Oct. to Nov. (2014) the WFP will only be able to provide 850 daily calories worth of food to these 6 million Syrians. The 6 million figure does not take into account nearly a million people in need of food aid that are in ISIS controlled areas.

Solution

The project will provide the most vulnerable groups including women, children, people with disabilities, and the elderly with seeds and resources necessary to produce their own food. Through partnerships with local Non Government Organizations, we ensure that seeds reach those most isolated, along with knowledge needed for gardening success. With the help of GlobalGiving donors, more than 42,000 seed packets will be provided to those in need of food.

Long-Term Impact

Food security for the families involved will be guaranteed even if the fragile political or economic situation changes negatively. The long-term goal is to help transition families in need of food aid from hand-to-mouth recipients of aid, to self-sustaining communities. Families will be able to stay in their homes, and benefit from greater resources dedicated to rebuilding their communities.
