New Retina Services at BPA Bareja Hospital

Greetings!!

I hope this email finds you safe and healthy. Our project Seeing is Believing has achieved another milestone in last month. The First Lady of Japan, Madam Akie Abe visited India in the year 2017. During her visit to Ahmedabad city, she visited our organization, and actively observed the activities, and interacted with students and trainees with disabilities. She loved the organization's activities, and she felt very vibrant. She mentioned that she would send a gift from the people of Japan. I am very happy to inform you that we have received a very precious gift from the people of Japan. They donated OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) with Yag Laser machine worth of 5 million INRs. The machine is a non-invasive diagnostic instrument used for imaging the retina. This future technology is used for imaging retina. The virtual inauguration of OCT Treatment Center was organized on 13th August 2020. Mr Michio Harada, the Consul-General of Japan in Mumbai, inaugurated the “Project for the Provision of Medical Equipment to Eye Hospital at Bareja” via TV video meeting due to COVID pandemic situation. After the visit of Mrs Akie Abe, First Lady of Japan, people of Japan extended support for installing Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) with Yag Laser Model at Bareja. This is the best quality Retina Care Treatment from Charity Hospital, and poor people will get the benefit of these services. The private hospital charges for Retina Treatment is not affordable by poor people. Now, the hospital has become one of the best charity hospitals in Gujarat having multispecialty eye care related services. Now, we can sever more poor people.

We request you to visit our eye hospital whenever you are happened to be in India. We would be very happy to show you our activities and work.

Covid19- Eye Care and Relief Work

Greetings from India!!

I trust that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. This is a very tough time for us, but we hope for the best. We shall overcome from this difficult time. I am here to share some positive story that motivates all of us.

As you are aware that the greatest need in this pandemic Covid19 is for good health facilities. In the time of this terrible disease, people prefer to treat and operate on other types of disease. One of the reasons is that they are afraid of getting an infection from the hospital. But if they do not get high-quality treatment with all precautionary measures at the right time, their illness can become serious, and life-threatening. Therefore, for such quality facilities to be available to them, the project team has been constantly striving, and facilitating.

Sameer is 22 years young man from Ahmedabad had a very good life, was living life with full joy and hope. Suddenly, he had trauma with stone in his left eye. He was very depressed, as he lost his vision. He had been to various hospitals for the treatment and operation. He did not get any satisfactory and positive response, and where he got a response, but the operation cost was very high, that he could not afford. His family uncle advised him to BPA Eye Hospital at Bareja. He came with the hope of the hospital. He was diagnosed at cornea OPD, open globe injury with corneal tear iris tissue prolapse.

He was advised to go for an open globe injury repair under LA. He was given an offer that whatever he can afford, he would pay. He was very happy and relaxed with such overwhelming response of the hospital staff. The surgery was done successfully, but after 3-4 months thick posterior subcapsular cataract development started developing and his vision got deteriorated.

Further, he was then advised cataractous lens extraction and intraocular lens implantation which was done without any charges. Samir had light perception after six months, in his last follow up his 6/6 vision is restored. Samir thanks the donors, and hospital staff who worked so hard in this COVID 19 situation, and given him a new life.

In this COVID 19 situation, the hospital and 9 vision centres has continued to provide their services. We did not have to organize any outreaching camps, keeping in mind the social distance norms.

During the reporting quarter, a total number of 894 patients have undergone surgery at Porecha Eye Hospital, An unit of Blind People Association, Bareja among which 894 were undergoing surgery for cataract the leading cause of blindness.

During the reporting period, no outreach programs have been organized keeping in view the COVID- 19 conditions in Gujarat.

Mahemada vision centre started on 8th of June 2020 with the support from Wagh Bakri Tea group.

The hospital team also work for relief work. The hospital team has distributed 2500 Ration kits to poor disabled persons at their doorstep. The team has covered more than 300 villages. Training on Glaucoma management done for the clinical staff of Bareja on 14^th of April 2020.

We have plan to set up a new Multi Speciality Eye Care hospital in Tribal area Gujarat, and this construction and equipment cost of this new hospital is 2,80,000$. Hope never Dies.

Greetings from BPA!!

We wish and pray for your wellbeingness. We know this is very tough time for all of us. The world has never seen a Catastrophe of this extent like the present coronavirus effect. Life has come to a standstill, the state is in lockdown, people's lives are totally turned over. The marginalized, the poor, people with disabilities and the aged are the most vulnerable and the group to suffer the most in the present circumstances.

In this tough and difficult situation, we have continued to provide best quality eye care services to poor people hence their vision can be restored. The hospital team did outreach camps, diagnosed around 10000 people having eye related problems, 1700 catract surgiers have been performed free of cost in last three months. We have started caratoplasty surgery at free of cost or with minimal charges in our hospital, In last three months, we were able to conduct 18 free caratoplasty surgery free of cost, and 06 surgeries were conducted with mininal charges of IRs 20000 (This surgery cost in the private hospital is around 1,50,000 INRs to 2,00,000).

I am happy to story of Madhuben. She is very poor lady and having extremely difficult life. She is a landless laborer. She doesn’t even own a kuccha house, she lives in a small hut. She has a family of 6. she and her husband both work as daily wage workers. Her husband is drunker, and spends his earnings on alchohol, he also abused her physically. Whenever she told her husband about her vision problem, he abused her and crushed to become blind. She stopped working due to her vision problem.

One day, there was a camp in her village, her neighbour took her to the camp. She was diagnosed having catract, and operation was needed to be done immediately. She was taken to the hospital, and surgery was performed without any charges. The recovery of eye sight was good, and she was also helped to set up small business outside of her home. She is very happy now.

We have also launched school eye health care program in Ahmedabad district. The free eye check up each student is done, and they are provided free glasses. The eye health has become major issue among school students due to extensive use of mobiles and TV. The hospital team also creates awarness among the school students.

With your support, and constant encouragment, we are able to expand our hospital servcies in Gujarat. We have been offered free land for new hospital building at Vatrak in Gujarat. The total project of new hospital complext is around 2,00,00,000 INRs. (29,000,00$).

In the amid threat of corona virus, the people find difficult to get masks for self protection, the prices is also highly inflated in the market. The poor people can not afford mask, and risking their life. BPA has initated Mask Project to provide mask to poor and needy people without any charges. The masks are stitched by the poor, disabled people and are given them employment. More than 18000 masks have already been distributed.

As we all know that this 21 days lockdown will affect the poorest of the poor and live hand to mouth existence. We are very worried about how they will be managing in the lockdown and in the aftermath when the economy takes a hit. We appeal to all donors and good human beings to help us to help these people to survive. After the lock down and also during the lockdown we will be reaching out and giving support like grains kit for one month to 1000 poor and disabled people. After the lockdown we will help these people for financial help to reset up their businesses and we look forward to your help in this regard.
