Cristi's Dreams

Cristina is 8 years old, together with her siblings; they started school in the middle of last year. They were referred to Asociación Nuestros Ahijados by the Child Protect Office in Guatemala, since their mother was being processed for not taking care well of her children.

This year Cristina and her siblings were enrolled in school. She will be in first grade which makes the family be very happy to have the opportunity to attend school since her parents didn’t have the opportunity to study and always wanted to give their children a better life, but because of their low education there are things that they don’t know and they give priority to other things instead of her children.

Their living conditions are not safe for the children; the parents are renting a small room which is made of metal tin, cardboard and plastic. The floor is made of dirt and it is a very small place for all of them to live. The area where their “house” is; is not an adequate and secure place to live, which makes the children be exposed to be abused from strangers who are haunting the area.

Because of the need of having something to eat each day and the nee of having a formal job, the parents send the children to sell hand crafts in the streets of Antigua, even at night which puts them in high risk of sexual depredators and street crime. For this reason the Child Support Office ordered the parents that they had to send the children to school and find a formal job to be able to support them, otherwise the children were going to be sent to a foster home and taken away from them.

Thanks to Asociación Nuestros Ahijados, the parents were able to have an opportunity to give their children the chance to attend school and saving them from danger and change their future through education; following their dreams and hopes. Cristina is very happy to come to school and learn a lot every day. Now she will be able to have a better future and change her life.

Dreaming

Every day children walk around in Antigua Guatemala close to the park, close to the churches or sometimes in front of the schools. They are selling candies, the rest of the children who finish a day full of classes are anxious to get home take a shower, eat, rest and play videogames. Parents are thinking to take them to english, music, and sport classes. In the middle are worried to pay rent, food, security and all expenses in normail life.

But, what happened with the children who were selling candies outside the school. Do they have dreams? Do they have something to achieve in life? Do they love to sell candies to live?. The answer is hard to obtain because we are in our own problems to look around. Is very sad when this children grow up and become an horrible adult, they act with violence maybe for instinct.

We could change their life, we could change their future, but we didn't. Well, this is responsible of the parents, they had to provide all their needs and they didn't. How about if their suffer the same case, so they unconscious start a new circle of problems. The chain of poverty will never be broken.

In Asociación Nuestros Ahijados de Guatemala and The GOD's CHILD Project is part of the mission to help this children in the streets and orphans to improve their conditions of life. While they receive help and orientation to change their enviroment, we try to educate the rest of the family to support their own children in the future, so with right conditions they have all the chances to break the chain of poverty.

In this times is not easy because the world has become an small space to live with a lot of problems around, is changing to fast and life looks to short. But, with small actions the life of people can be change it.

We believe, the children who has to chance to study and get a really good formation increase the opportunities to achieve their dreams and be a doctor, teacher, lawyer etc.

And the best of all, they can help others.

FOLLOWING THE PATHS TO A DREAM

Hello, my name is Annelis; I’m nine years old, I’m a girl who wants to study hard to become a nurse and help to heal many people that can’t afford to pay a doctor. I have five wonderful sisters who I play with and we’re always taking care of each other.

Daddy works helping to organize events and parties, he is in charge of setting the chairs and tables and he makes that the people in the party are having a beautiful place where they can eat and have fun. He’s a great man and he helps my sisters and I in everything we are doing.

My mommy is the most beautiful woman in the world, but lately she has been sad, and I don’t know why; but every night she complains of having much pain in her throat, my daddy says that she will feel better soon, but I don’t think so, because she is very thin and is losing her hair.

I try to coddle my mommy every day, but she is not getting better, however, I want her to feel better; for that reason, I’m studying hard everyday at the Dreamer Center School in Asociación Nuestros Ahijados, to reach my dream of being a nurse. Now, I’m in third grade and I love to go to school.

I like to play with my sisters and also to help with the house duties, when I come back from school, I help to feed my mommy, she eats a very little food, almost nothing, but we prepare the most delicious food for her, so she can eat.

I feel happy to study at the Dreamer Center School, they feed me breakfast and lunch every day but what I like the most is my classroom, it’s always very neat and clean and there are a lot of green plants; it looks like a palace to me. I love it here because we can play hide and seek and it’s hard to find the children. I wake up everyday happy and anxious to get to school. I can be the happiest girl there!

I love to play with all the volunteers, they are always happy and they help me to study, besides that they support Asociación Nuestros Ahijados so I can keep receiving education. Thanks to them I can continue building my dreams.
