Project Report | Mar 9, 2020
Building a sustainable future for all

By Charlotte Goodwin | Assistant Program Manager

Dear Supporters,

It has been a very positive start to 2020! All our participants and project partners have kicked off the year with renewed energy and high levels of optimism, with an exciting first quarter full of inspiring project achievements and learning opportunities for everyone involved.

“Don’t be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered.” – Michelle Obama

Education is one of the most powerful instruments for reducing poverty and inequality within disadvantaged communities. By ensuring the access to quality education for all, particularly for those living within the township locations, it is critical to the economic and social development of South African communities.

Since the start of 2020 the Women’s Empowerment program has had a tremendous impact within the Nomzamo community. Over the past 2 months we have successfully worked with a total of 395 different women, taught 822 individual computer lessons and had a wonderful 23 women become fully certified in the South African Qualifications Authority endorsed course. Not only has attendance for the course been high, but the communities interest remains consistent and participants in the course have shown a great interest in becoming teachers, alongside program participants, to teach their fellow community members, which ultimately contributes to the program’s overall sustainability.

Many women participating in the course are incredibly proud of their achievements, and continually reflect on their progress, showing thoughts of how they can develop new and innovative ways to utilise their newfound skills to improve themselves and their family’s livelihoods.

By offering females in developing communities the opportunity to access basic educational programs, such as computer skills, it plays an integral role in giving them greater power, to enable them to make genuine choices over the kinds of lives they ultimately wish to lead. Families should be places of equality and justice, where mothers feel empowered enough to empower their children and realise that they are capable of more then what their socio-economic situation. We continue to work hard at ensuring that the Women’s Empowerment program is not only sustainable but thriving, busy, proactive, and always evolving to cater for the growing needs and interests of the community. We aim to make sure that we continue to reflect on our progress and make sure that we are fulfilling the direct needs of the community.

This program empowers women to take control of their futures, to become leaders, movers, makers and shapers. Giving them the power to choose how they learn and the opportunity to support other like minded women on the course, as together we work to create a confident, powerful, educated and sustainable future.

The successes we have seen so far this year would not have been possible without support from our donors, who play a key role in helping the community get that little bit closer to achieving their dreams.

It is the women we work with daily, who make the program a success and it is with all your support that the success becomes visible for participants to take the reins in carving out a path for their community, to achieve more than they initially believe capable.

“We do not need magic to transform the world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. We have the power to imagine better” – J.K Rowling

Overall, we’ve had a strong start to 2020, sharing the programs development and achievements with faces old and new. We hope you are as excited as we are to see how the program continues to thrive over the coming year.

Thank you, on behalf of every single life you have impacted, no matter how big or small.

ENKOSI!
