Summary

Young women and mothers in Guatemala are often uneducated on the important topics the SEND Project will expose them to. The GOD'S CHILD Project will host weekly workshops every Friday to educate 100 women from the surrounding areas of Antigua, Guatemala on sexual health, proper nutrition for themselves and their children, and forms of sustainable development. These work shops will give these women the tools to break the cycle of poverty and better the lives of their children and families.

Challenge

Sexual education is rare in the schools of Guatemala, as it is considered a sensitive and taboo subject. 59% of women between ages 15-24 have never received a formal education on sexual health. The 2018 Census states that while the birth rate decreased, cases of teenage pregnancies increased. Malnutrition affects 66% of the population in poverty according to the UN Food Report. This project will equip 100 mothers with the proper education to reverse these trends and learn self-sustainability.

Solution

The differentiating element of this project lies in educating women of reproductive age in order to provide them with the necessary information to make responsible decisions regarding their sexuality and bodies and to guide current mothers in the area of personal and family nutrition, as these are two principal problems that impede the development of communities. These workshops, along with education on self-sustaining practices, will improve the future of the mothers and their children.

Long-Term Impact

Providing 100 women with valuable information on sexual health, proper nutrition and self-sustainability practices will allow them to think differently about crucial topics they never received formal education on as children and adolescents and encourage them to pass along this knowledge to family and friends. The family garden kits we distribute will come with a demonstration and training on how to implement in your home. The SEND Project will empower these women to enact change in their lives.
