Embarking on sustainable projects

Shelter Them Batarure has raised funds to build 5 houses to shelter homeless vulnerable families. Thank you to all who responded quickly to our call as the urgency to rescue people in desperate situations requires quick responses. We are so much grateful; my God bless you all.

After the shelter project, there was a need to assist the five households to live independently which has compelled us to support their initiatives to set up the farming and saving scheme social enterprise. They have come together and built a farming cooperative and a saving scheme. They do farming project of maize and beans where they harvest twice a year. They do sell their harvest products and sell, and save the profit from the money they got from this business.

So far they have savings worth 1.7 million Rwandese Francs in their bank account. Seeing the progress, they are making, Shelter Them Batarure has continued to assist them to improve their productivity to put in place a harvest shelter complex including a meeting room, store room and crops conservation room. Shelter Them supported also the cooperative with clean water where a water supply company was contracted to provide clean water to this community.

Shelter Them Batarure envisions to see these families stand for their own economically and live a better life everyone deserves.

Poverty is not a curse; it is an adversity any one can overcome if one is supported properly.

BUILD THE ROOF, AND CREATE OPPORTUNITIES

Shelter Them Batrure has already built four (04) houses out of the five (05) that were in the initial plan. There are currently 22 vulnerable children who have been rescued from the deplorable situation they lived in before as they were exposed to natural disasters of all kinds. Lack of shelter coupled with lack of necessities such as food and healthcare had put the lives of these children in danger. After the children moved to the new houses built and their families, Shelter Them Batarurehad involved their families to start the quick impact projects such as farming, sewing and groups saving scheme. In addition, the children had been supported to go to school.

Currently the results are impressive. So far, Shelter Them Batarure is supporting two cooperatives- farming and saving cooperative, and sewing cooperative where all its beneficiaries are empowered to become self-sufficient. The farming and saving cooperative do farming of maize and beans. They have harvested four times, and their crops have been sold and have saved their money. The sewing cooperative members make clothes and sale them, then save their money.

Currently, except from the four houses Shelter Them have built for them, they are providing bread on their table for themselves and they are proud to continue doing so towards their sustainability.

It has been an exciting journey mixed of success and failures to support them so that at one point they are empowered to break the dependency syndrome.

Shelter Them rests assured that the future of the children under Shelter Them support will be better because of the great opportunities created to their parents, and a conducive environment we put in place to enable these children have proper education.

We are so grateful for the generosity of the donors who supported this cause so that these children can have a life filled with hope. We still need your help to be able to accomplish our goal fully.

From homeless to self-sufficient

First and foremost, I would like to thank all who contributed in different ways to this project to save the lives of vulnerable children who had no shelter. Because of your generation donations, 4 families who had been in the past living in poor conditions are sheltered comfortably and their children enjoy the environment conducive to their wellbeing. This has allowed us to provide early childhood development services to these children living in these houses built in this project. We have built a community center along with four houses where the children spend their time playing different games, receive daily nutrition of two meals a day and learn numbers, letters, songs, poems and other things around them with intend to prepare them to go to formal schools.

This project has changed the lives of people in a short period of time. These are the persons who were living on the streets, where you would find on the street a woman carrying small kids with her begging money everyone passing by on her side. We provided them clean water, and electricity which helped the student children to drink clean water and do their school home works. This project has reserved a farming area where these families can grow fruits, vegetables and other short seasonal crops to support their nutrition. We also assisted the families to grow domestic animals such as rabbits, goats and chickens. With these animal they get eggs, and meat but also sale to get money to buy other food stuff they want.

Our next plan is to build another remaining one house for one family. But we would also want to ensure continuing supporting the settled families to live independently. This will be possible as we engage our people getting acquainted with income generating activities such as social enterprises through cooperatives. We have so far initiated two cooperatives of sewing, and farming and saving cooperatives for everyone to take part in them and develop themselves to become self-reliant economically.
