The construction works kicked off with two houses
By Jules Higiro | Country Manager
Shelter Them Batarure Rwanda project fundraising goal grew of 4% from our previous report. This is an important increase notwithstanding the Covid 19 pandemic. Our major donors who used to come to see Shelter Them Batarure projects suspended their trips due to Covid 19 restriction worldwide. This has affected negatively our fundraising campaign to reach 40,000$ in 2021.
In our previous report we committed to start the building of two homes with the funds we have so far raised. Shelter them co-founders also initiated a 71Km Walk to Shelter Them campaign to raise funds to supplement what we had collected so far. Shelter Them founders; Josephine Murphy and Jocelyne Alexandre walked from Hamilton Mountain to the CN Tower in Toronto, about 71 km for two days Saturday and Sunday, October 9 and 10, to raise funds to complete building two homes in the move to reach our ultimate goal of building 5 houses by end of 2021. To support this campaign donate by clicking on this link: https://www.globalgiving.org/fundraisers/37098/.
Currently we are at 80% completion construction works of two houses. We expect to finish these two houses by the end of November 2021, and start immediately two more houses. By end of December 2021, we anticipate to have four houses completed to settle in four vulnerable families. Some of the families who have settled in our new finished houses and others yet to relocate in have found to suffer from mental health issues because of the adversity of life they went through since their early age. Because of this problem suffer from all kinds of addictions. We believe to recruit a professional counselor for them to get recovered from the addictions.
Their kids will be taken care of the caregivers from the community center we have already built.

26 children eagerly await good news this year
By Jules Higiro | Country Manager
Shelter Them Batarure project fundraising goal to build 5 homes for 26 vulnerable children has reached 16% since last year December 2020 to date. The fundraising campaigns was gradually slowed down since early this year because of the second wave of COVID 19. This has negatively impacted our new projects because our donors prioritized on finding our existing projects such as our early childhood development center where 87 children receive developmental services since April 2021 such as nutrition, child protection, hygiene, sanitation, playing and learning. Our donors continue also to support to the livelihoods of our vulnerable families such as food support, education for children and healthcare.
Though we need the full project funding to build five homes for 26 vulnerable children, we have decided to start with the 16% of the funds we have raised to build two homes this year. The construction of those two houses will start as soon as total lockdown is lifted in Rwanda
To complete the building of the five homes hopefully end of this year, the founders of Shelter Them Josephine Murphy and Jocelyne Alexandre will raise money by doing a walk campaign from their home town to Toronto CN Tower in Toronto Canada this coming October 2021. This upcoming campaign is expected to raise the remaining money required to build more three houses.
We are so excited to give an amazing Chritmas gift to our beneficiaries!

26 children eagerly await good news this year
By Jules Higiro | Country Manager
In only one month of accelerator campaign our project attracted more than 70 donors who generously contributed more than $ 6,000. Our goal has been reached beyond our expectations which qualified us to become a permanent partner of GlobalGiving. We can’t thank enough all people who donated towards this great cause to build 5 homes for 26 vulnerable children in Rwanda. This project has expanded our donors’ list; as a result, we expect to reach the ultimate goal of $40,000 this year counting on the bigheartedness of the people who came aboard in only one month. Though we are currently at 16% to meet our goal we have hope and confidence in our supporters and others yet to join us considering the last accelerator campaign experience which ascertained us to have trust in them.
In the previous year, Shelter Them built 5 homes which benefited 25 children of whom kids below 6 years have joined the early childhood education center in the same location. This move has tremendously changed the lives of these children. They came from a poor environment which had affected their normal development, and the malnutrition among the children was alarming. In the new location, the environment is conducive to their growth. Our new community center has an Early Childhood Education program where the children get education, nutrition, sanitation by trained caregivers at their service and also there is a playground to enjoy. These children most importantly get to be prepared to start the formal school.
This model of housing is the one Shelter Them envisions to undertake as our beneficiaries awaits it impatiently to start. We have secured land, and the plan of the houses (picture 1). We won’t start building until we have available funds required as the model of the houses is connected to each other for cost effectiveness and to gain space. This project will see vulnerable children living well, but also go to early childhood development center to get preschool services.
