Smallholder farmers in rural Nigeria walk up to 10 km daily on rough terrain without proper footwear. As a result, 38% report foot infections and 24% face reduced working days in planting season. This project will provide durable shoes for 500 struggling farmers, protecting their health and enabling them to safely continue farming. Immediate action is needed as the harvest season approaches, when farmers spend extended time in harsh field conditions.
Most rural farmers in Nigeria lack proper footwear. They walk long distances to their farms and spend hours working barefoot in rough terrain, often facing hazards such as thorns, sharp stones, and snake bites. Foot infections and untreated wounds are common, forcing many to lose valuable workdays during planting or harvest. With low earnings, they cannot afford durable shoes. This situation traps farmers in a cycle of poor health and reduced productivity.
This project will distribute durable, low-cost shoes to 500 struggling farmers. Each pair will reduce the risk of injuries, infections, and hospital visits. Shoes will be sourced locally to support Nigerian manufacturers and delivered through community associations, making distribution simple and transparent. With better protection, farmers will work more safely, spend less on medical treatment, and maintain steady productivity during the crucial planting and harvest seasons.
With proper footwear, farmers will stay healthier and more productive, enabling them to sustain their livelihoods and provide for their families. Protecting their feet reduces medical costs and prevents work interruptions. In the long term, safer working conditions can raise farm productivity, improve food security, and strengthen household income. Local shoe production also benefits the economy, creating jobs while meeting the practical needs of struggling rural farmers.
