Summary

Slipper Day takes place in May each year and is a simple and easy way to do something good and support children fighting life threatening illnesses. This fun initiative is one of the Foundation's largest fundraises. It mobilises the global community to show support to brave children who are fighting for their lives in hospitals, hospices and homes. Slipper Day this year is on the 8 May 2020 and we need your support to help fulfil more dreams.

Challenge

When a child is faced with a life-threatening illness the impact that a dream coming true can have on their well being is overwhelming. A larger percentage of children survive life threatening illnesses than adults. The foundation believes that one of the reasons for this is that children simply have not learnt what life-threatening means, they live each day as it is given to them

Solution

The fulfilment of these dreams inspires hope and courage in the dreamer and helps them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for. Fulfilling dreams enables children to experience a fun aspect of life which they do not get to participate in due to their illness. The positive effect of a dream lingers and children often respond better to medication. These children, between the ages of 3 and 18 years, have used their dreams to fight illnesses such as cancer, cystic fibrosis and heart conditions.

Long-Term Impact

Dream fulfilment is the core work of the Foundation and together with project support, we offer the entire family an experience that is valuable at that moment in time, but also for years to come. The work that the Foundation does is critical to the wellbeing and development of the child. "Biologically, hope can stimulate the release of internal painkiller molecules" Dr. Jerome Groopman, Professor and Chairman of Department of Medicine, Harvard Medical School.
