Barefoot Children Face Injuries and Infection Risk

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely appreciate the donors who have shown support for the Slippers for 1,500 Barefoot Children in Nigeria project. Your concern for the safety and health of children in underserved communities is deeply valued. At present, however, the donations received are still not enough for the slipper distribution program to begin.

In many rural villages across Nigeria, children walk long distances every day without footwear. They travel to school, markets, farms, and water points with bare feet on hot ground, rough paths, and sometimes sharp objects. During the dry season, the heat from the soil can burn their feet, while stones and thorns often cause cuts and injuries.

Walking barefoot also exposes children to infections and soil related diseases. In some communities, children develop worm infections that affect their health and strength. When injuries or infections occur, families who already struggle with poverty must spend money on treatment, and children may miss school while recovering.

This project plans to distribute 1,500 pairs of durable rubber slippers to children in villages across Nasarawa, Kogi, Borno, and Benue states. Community leaders and school staff will help identify children who are most in need. The slippers will be purchased from local markets and carefully fitted to each child during distribution to confirm the correct size.

Providing simple footwear can help children move safely through their daily activities and reduce the risk of injuries and infections. It can also make it easier for them to attend school regularly without discomfort or health concerns.

We are grateful for the kindness already shown toward this effort. With continued support from caring donors, we hope to begin distributing slippers to the children who are currently walking barefoot in these communities.

Sincerely,

Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
