No Light During Childbirth Put Moms/babies at Risk

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you for your continued support of the Solar Lights for Safe Nighttime Deliveries project. We are grateful for your generosity and for helping us move closer to improving childbirth conditions in rural health facilities.

We are pleased to share an important development. Our letter of recommendation and engagement request submitted to the Ministry of Health has been approved. This marks a significant step toward implementation and allows us to proceed with planning activities for the first phase of the project.

Following this approval, our team has begun the process of identifying the most vulnerable health facilities where poor lighting continues to affect nighttime deliveries. We are working with relevant stakeholders to determine which hospitals and birth centres have the greatest need and where the solar lighting systems can have the greatest impact.

Although donations received so far have helped move the project forward, additional support is needed to expand implementation and reach more facilities. Many rural health centres continue to depend on flashlights, candles, lanterns, or other inadequate lighting sources during childbirth and emergency care.

Reliable lighting can make a major difference during labour and delivery. It helps healthcare workers see clearly, respond quickly during complications, and provide safer care for mothers and newborns. Improving visibility also reduces the risks associated with delivering babies in poorly lit environments.

If all arrangements proceed as planned, we hope to begin the first phase of implementation next month. In our next report, we look forward to sharing photographs, beneficiary facility information, and updates from the field.

Thank you for helping improve maternal and newborn care in underserved communities. Your support is helping bring safer childbirth conditions to places where they are urgently needed.

Warm regards,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
