Solar Lights to Improve Nighttime Deliveries

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear donors,

We sincerely thank you for the support received toward the “Solar Lights for Safe Nighttime Deliveries” project. Previously, we reported that we had written to the Ministry of Health requesting a letter of recommendation, which is yet to be issued. Once this approval is given, we will be able to roll out the first phase of the project with government backing, ensuring smooth implementation and wider recognition.

Many rural health centers have no reliable lighting for night deliveries. Midwives often rely on candles, torches, or kerosene lamps, which are unsafe and can lead to mistakes during labor, putting mothers and newborns at risk. Lack of proper illumination also sometimes forces staff to delay urgent care until morning, increasing the likelihood of complications.

This project will provide 50 solar-powered light kits to rural birth centers and health posts. These kits offer strong, safe lighting without fuel or wiring, and can be charged during the day for use at night. Midwives will use the lights for deliveries, emergencies, and routine care, helping them work more effectively and safely.

With steady lighting, midwives will be more confident, mothers and babies will receive safer care, and local communities will develop greater trust in health facilities. Once the Ministry’s letter is issued, the first phase will commence immediately, bringing immediate benefits to health workers and the women they serve.

Your support ensures that this project can begin quickly once official approval is granted, saving lives and improving maternal and newborn care in remote areas.

Respectfully,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
