Amid the death and devastation in Israel and Gaza, civilians on both sides are again paying the highest price for war. While Adalah is working to protect Palestinians besieged in Gaza facing a humanitarian disaster, in Israel, we are representing Palestinian citizens of Israel being targeted by the state, universities and workplaces with trumped-up incitement charges and prosecuted, expelled, or fired for social media posts, in a crushing blow for freedom of expression.
Israel's military attacks on Gaza, which followed the brutal, deadly attacks by Palestinian militants in Israel on 7 October, have resulted in thousands of civilians killed and injured. Meanwhile Palestinian citizens of Israel are facing legal prosecution and racist incitement, expulsion and firing from their universities and workplaces for social media posts expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, in an atmosphere of growing repression and intimidation.
Adalah will represent Palestinian students before Israeli university disciplinary panels and in courts, and offer legal advice to workers in cases involving violations of freedom of expression rights. Adalah will provide targeted Palestinian citizens with pro bono legal representation against trumped- up, discriminatory criminal charges of incitement, defend arrested protestors, and try to block new emergency regulations that violate the rights to freedom of political speech and expression.
This project is a short-term appeal for solidarity and legal support for Palestinians. Amid the worst humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians in Gaza since 1948, Palestinian citizens of Israel, around 1.6 million people, are facing a draconian crackdown and tightening state surveillance of their expression.
