Sondu water kiosk is a local enterprise situated in rural under-served area, where there is high burden of disease and poor water and sanitation infrastructure. Sondu river is highly contaminated and in absence of a reliable water source vulnerable communities use the river water for household use. This has caused high incidence of diarrhea and child mortality. SWAP established a skyhydrant filtration unit to provide clean and safe water drinking water sold to communities at an affordable rate.
Sondu Market is in Western Kenya, where there is high burden of disease. The area has one of the highest rates of HIV among adults. Many community members lack basic education. There is limited access to safe clean drinking water and poor sanitation practices, often open defecation. The river Sondu Miriu serves as drinking water source, but is highly contaminated. Offering clean and safe drinking water with health education as well clean toilet facilities will reduce diarrhea and improve health
The project already established a skyhydrant filtration unit. This is functional but incomplete and needs further support . Water is pumped from the river, filtered and then sold to community members at an affordable price. The project further offers training and door to door health promotion by trained community health volunteers. The water kiosk is centrally located at the market place and also offers public toilet use at a small fee.
We will treat 5000 liters of river water daily and sell to approximately 150 people, who are individuals from households and water vendors. We offer toilet facility to Sondu residents who reside around the market place or who come to buy drinking water. Long term effect will be reduced diarrhea illness and no longer cholera outbreaks which have been frequent in the area. It will save lives especially of young children under five and people with compromised immunity (HIV, cancer, elderly)
