Summary

This project establishes a fund for adults with disabilities to attend SPARC without paying the monthly participation fee. We help participants with lifelong and vocational learning, and make it easy to attend vocational and like skills classes at low prices. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need. Month after month and year after year we have to raise $11,000 per month to close the gap between fees paid and actual costs.

Challenge

Young adults from the age of 21 are forced to make their own way in our world, even if they have disabilities. Some young adults are even encouraged to graduate early, ensuring they don't receive educational resources to which they are entitled. The Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice criticized Virginia's assistance for adults with disabilities multiple times, but even with that attention, more than 9,500 people remain on a multi-year waiting list for assistance.

Solution

SPARC provides day support in 4 Virginia communities to more than 50 people. In addition to art and music therapy, our proprietary Circuit Train Your Brain program allows for lifelong learning. Through grant supports, vocational and life skills classes are available multiple times through the year for each participant at greatly reduced prices.

Long-Term Impact

We will provide educational and support services for more than 50 people in the communities we serve. Many will move on to work programs or otherwise socialize themselves into the community. Others attend SPARC instead of simply being trapped at home with little or no outside interaction. One of our members joined when we were founded in 2006. He said before SPARC he felt like he had aged out of life when he turned 22. No one should feel that way. We can do better as a society.
