Finding his voice

By Debi Alexander | Executive Director

Tommy joined SPARC a year ago.  Tommy was diagnosed with Autsim Sectrum Disorder (ASD).  ASD is a neurological alnd developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn and behave    He was non verbal and very shy.  Routinely he and his Personal Support Attendant (PSA) would leave the room to go for walk as the activities were over stimulating.

One day the SPARC site lead jokingly answered a question in Spanish.  Tommy, who at the age of 26 had never uttered a word, responded correctly!!!!  Everyone was astounded  His family was not spanish-spekaing, but he had been exposed to spanish as an infant.

The team began engaging Tommy in various speech therapy exercises.

Soon, Tommy began to engage and smile.  His first word was "hi".  He began to stand at the door ad greet everyone as they entered the room.  Tommy began to hold out his arms to give his SPARC friends and the staff a hug.  He has added five words to his vocabulary and has increased his non verbal communication as well.

Everyone at SPARC celebrates the progress Tommy is making.

There are many studies published about people who are ont he spectrum who are non verbal.  Verbal capacity is a growing area of research and study.  Verbal capacity is the ability to use language effectively and appropriately in different situations. It icludes skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and understanding.  It can be influenced by factors such as social interaction.
