Spay/Neuter Update
We have been BUSY ! So far in 2016 we have already completed 1,263 spays and neuters ! WOW. Our annual goal is 1,000 fixes so thanks to YOUR donations we have already exceeded this amount.
Heres a story about the kind of things we get up to and how are programs are helping the community.
In early August Baark! received a pleading phone call from a family in the Marathon area in Nassau, Bahamas. Fredrica originally had a few cats she fed but only two had been spayed. She was now dealing with a growing colony of cats in her yard due to the breeding of the unaltered cats in her neighborhood.
Volunteers Michelle and Aliya set out early on a Sunday morning to assess the situation and begin the TNR (trap, neuter, release) process. They found that not only were the cats in Fredrica's yard but they had also taken up residence on the neighbor's property, too. Within about an hour , 4 cats were caught in traps, transported to the vet's clinic, spayed / neutered and returned to the yard where they were found following their recovery. One of the cats trapped and neutered is a friendly stray named 'Stretch', introduced to us by Fredrica's son.
A few weeks later we returned to Fredrica's house where more kittens had since been born and were running the risk of being killed due to dogs in the neighborhood or cars . We were able to trap 7 cats in total , including 3 young kittens and a mama cat who we were sure was the mother of many a cat in this colony. On this visit, Michelle and Aliya had help Fredrica's son assisted them by closing a trap door when one of the cats entered. Again , volunteers transported the cats to the veterinary clinic where they were spayed and had their ears clipped ( identification showing a cat has been spayed or neutered).
Since the spaying of the 11 cats in Fredrica's yard , the population is already much more manageable and the family appreciated Baark!'s efforts. Plans are in the making to return to the house and continue the TNR process until all cats in the colony have been spayed.
While we have aleady exceeded our spay/neuter goal , while we continue to fundraise we will keep working to do more snips, help people like Fredrica and continue to reduce the homeless and suffering animal populations. Please continue to donate to help us !
