December 22nd 2015 - Baark! Report #12
Spay & Neuter Update
In our last report we gave you an update about a dog and her puppies that we had been made aware of by a concerned member of the public. We've also told you stories in the past about both wild cats and dogs which we trap for Spay/Neuter. This quarter we've been busy with those types of things again but also we have been helping out The 'Breezes' hotel in Nassau and their 6 resident cats who live on the property.
The cats are fed and kept an eye on by members of staff who have grown very fond of them hanging around the pool area. They also get attention from a lot of guests and have even been known to have been invited to spend a night or two in guest rooms. We are an advocate for having cats on large properties such as hotel sites as it keeps the rodent population to a minimum.
However the numbers do have to be humanely managed and this is where Baark! stepped up to help. After being approached by Breezes, our volunteers along with a local student Taylor who has chosen to help Baark! as part of her community service went along with traps, carriers and a supply of sardines. The cats were actually very friendly and they were able to pick up 4 of the cats and put them straight into carriers. Two of the shyer ones needed trapping but they went quickly in there and were taken to the vets for their surgery the next morning. After being spayed/neutered and a quick wellness check, once awake the cats were returned to the property. As you can see fromt the photos they were very happy to be back on the sand !
Baark! was very happy to see this example of a resort acting responsibly when it came to their cat managment and we were delighted to assist.
As ever, it is with the help of your generous donations that we are able to continue with such programs and keep on spaying/neutering to reduce the number of homless and suffering animals.
Our total sterilizations for the year so far is 700 , taking our grand total since our inception in 2009 to over 4000 spay and neuters !
Holiday Wishes !
Everyone at Baark! and on behalf of all the animals in the Bahamas, we would like to wish you a wonderful holiday season followed by a happy, healthy 2016. We hope to continue to count on your support.
