Many children in low-resource areas in Nigeria are born with cleft lips and never receive surgery due to cost, distance, or lack of awareness. This project will sponsor surgery and care for 100 children who are currently living with untreated cleft lips. Funds will cover hospital fees, travel support, and basic aftercare. Surgeries will be arranged in safe, approved clinics with local medical teams and volunteers helping identify children in need.
Thousands of children in poor communities live with untreated cleft lips. Many are hidden from public view or face shame, rejection, and feeding problems. Surgery is often out of reach due to poverty, lack of services nearby, and poor knowledge about where to get help. Some families turn to harmful traditional practices. Without care, affected children face health issues and social isolation for life.
This project will provide full surgical sponsorship for 100 children in Nigeria. Local teams will identify children with cleft lips and refer them to trained surgeons at approved hospitals. Travel and basic support will be arranged. Surgeries will be done safely and include feeding and follow-up care. Families will also receive information about care and protection, helping reduce stigma and improve treatment access.
Children who receive surgery will be able to eat, speak, and grow without stigma. Their chances of going to school and living normally increase. Families will see that care is possible and safe. Local partners will also learn how to support early referrals. In future, the number of untreated cleft cases in these areas will drop, and more families will seek help instead of hiding their children.
