Children With Cleft Lips Face Barriers to Surgery

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you for supporting the Sponsor Surgeries for 100 Children with Cleft Lips project. We sincerely appreciate your generosity and compassion toward children and families facing the challenges associated with untreated cleft lip conditions.

Many children living with cleft lips experience difficulties with feeding, speech development, and social acceptance. In low-income communities, families often struggle to access surgical care due to financial constraints, transportation costs, and limited information about available treatment options. As a result, many children continue living with conditions that can be corrected through surgery.

We are grateful for the donations received so far. However, the funds currently available are not sufficient to begin implementation of the project. Additional support is needed before beneficiary identification, surgical scheduling, transportation assistance, and medical support activities can commence.

This project aims to support children from disadvantaged families by covering costs related to surgery and basic follow-up care. Local volunteers and healthcare partners will help identify children in need and connect them with approved hospitals where treatment can be provided safely.

Access to corrective surgery can have a profound effect on a child's life. Beyond the physical benefits, treatment can improve confidence, support school participation, and reduce the social stigma that many affected children experience. Families also gain hope when they see that treatment is available and achievable.

Although implementation has not yet begun, we remain committed to helping children receive the care they need. We continue working toward the resources required to launch the first phase of the project and expand support to more families.

In future reports, we hope to share updates on beneficiary identification, treatment activities, and the children whose lives will be changed through access to surgery.

Thank you for standing with vulnerable children and helping create opportunities for healthier and brighter futures.

Warm regards,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
