Burned Children Find a Healing Tree

By Carolyn Schuetz | Dir./Treas, COANIQUEM Burned Children Foundation

The COANIQUEM burn treatment centers in Chile understand that the burned child suffers emotional and psychological pain as well as the physical trauma of burns.  The holistic approach to treatment has helped over 130,000 patients over COANIQUEM's almost 40-year history.

In 2017 a creative and whimsical program was added to the array of services for the children and their families.

Thanks to the pro bono work of students from Design Matters in the Art Center of Pasadena, California, in consultation with COANIQUEM staff, a Healing Tree has been created.  A story of children and animals, with cheerful and colorful graphics now adorns the walls of the center in Santiago.  The Center becomes a child-friendly world that reduces patient stress and increases healing.

Animal characters in the story symbolize the different therapies that the children undergo  -  and the personal strengths that the animals model for the children:  courage, wisdom, calm, curiosity, etc.  A colorful children's book, telling the story of two children following the trail of the healing animals, is available to the children and their families.

Instead of facing a place of dread, the children enter a world of adventure and challenge that they can conquer!

See the attached pictures to share in this delightful approach to treatment.

Your financial support would allow the continuing medical and holistic care of the children.  Thank you!
