Students in the Desingmatters program at the Art Center in Pasadena, California, have created a playful interactive environment for the healing of burned children at the COANIQUEM burn center in Santiago, Chile.
More than a dozen students spent months examining the existing facilities at COANIQUEM, even staying at the facility for several weeks to determine the most meaningful changes.
These students have transformed COANIQUEM into a magical ecosystem that empowers and nurtures patients and families through their healing journey.
The World of Santi and Friends is inhabited by several magical animal characters. In each of several areas of the facility and stages of treatment, these animals portray qualities helpful to the children and their families - bravery, patience, strength, understanding, etc. Wall decorations and interactive devices have transformed areas into colorful and fun spaces that ease the pain and anxiety of the children and their parents.
Early experiences with the installations have received very positive reactions from the children, their parents - and staff members. The program exhibits the commitment of COANIQUEM to continually improve and enhance their holistic approach to returning burned children to meaningful lives.
