COANIQUEM Celebrates 40 Years, 135,000 Children

By Carolyn Schuetz | Dir/Treas. COANIQUEM Burned Children Foundation

Dr Jorge Rojas-Zegers
Dr Jorge Rojas-Zegers

Over 40 years ago, Dr Jorge Rojas-Zegers, a young resident doctor in Chile, was heartbroken when he first encountered a young patient who had been severely burned.  Because this young boy came from a very poor family, the prognosis for his rehabilitation was grim  .Because the resources for his rehabilitation were non-existent at that time, there was apparently "no hope" for someone like him.

Dr Rojas wouldn't take "no" for an answer.  He set out to treat this child.  This was no easy undertaking.  Burned children are extremely complicated cases because scar tissue doesn't grow in the same manner as normal skin.  And for severe cases, rehabilitation can take up to 15 years.  Through the implementation of innovative strategies, Dr Rojas was able to treat his first burned child successfully.

His vision became to create a non-profit organization dedicated to the comprehensive rehabilitation of burned children, offering holistic treatments that involved plastic surgery, physical and psychological therapy -  free of charge.

Forty years  and 135,000 children (from Chile and througout Latin Ameirca) later, Dr Rojas and his organization continue to lead the field of childhood burn rehabilitation  -  and prevention.

Helping burned children changed the lives of Dr Rojas and many others on his staff as well as the  "army" of volunteers.

If you would like to help make a difference in these young lives, please join the growing list of donors .

It will change your life too!
