Treatment and Progress Returning to Normal after t
By Robert L. Cowan | Treasurer
The restrictions due to Covid have relaxed significantly in person treatment of children has partially resumed, but the treatment of many children still has to be addressed through telemedicine. Instructions on wound dressing replacement and other procedures that could be done remotely were taught and monitored telemedicine. Cases that do need treatment at the Coaniquem hospital, such as surgeries, proceeded as usual, and the follow on care can be accomplished by telemedicine in many cases. In all cases, the rules, regulations and changes in medical protocols necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic have been addressed successfully by the Coaniquem staff.
The new Laser Treatment device, made possible in part by the monies collected in memory of Lloyd Baysdorfer, is now in operation. This new procedure utilizes lasers to keep scar tissue more soft and pliable by creating micro-perforations in the scar; and will promote healthy tissue around and beneath it. This approach speeds up the recovery and reduces the possibilities of severe scarring.

Treatment and Progress During the Pandemic
By Robert L Cowan | Treasurer
Many of the travel restrictions due to the Covd-19 pandemic are being lifted and more cases are being treated in the clinics. The follow on care in many cases is still accomplished by telemedicine. In addition, the treatment of many children continues to be addressed through telemedicine and is becoming a best practice. Instructions on wound dressing replacement and other procedures that could be done remotely are taught and monitored by telemedicine. In all cases, the rules, regulations and changes in medical protocols necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic have been addressed successfully by the Coaniquem staff.
The new device that employs a laser technique for the treatment of scar tissues is now in service. This $200,000 device was made possible by a dedicated fund raising campaign to honor the memory of Lloyd Baysdorfer, an ardent advocate of Coaniquem BCF. This new procedure utilizes lasers to keep scar tissue more soft and pliable by creating micro-perforations in the scar; and will promote healthy tissue around and beneath it. This will speed up the recovery of the child and the possibilities of reducing scarring. See the previous report in this series for more details.

Treatment of Burned Children Continues Despite Covid-19
By Robert L Cowan | Treasurer
Because of travel restrictions, the treatment of many children had to be addressed through telemedicine. Instructions on wound dressing replacement and other procedures that could be done remotely were taught and monitored telemedicine. Cases that did need treatment at the Coaniquem Clinic in Santiago, such as surgeries, proceeded as usual, but the follow on care was accomplished in many cases by telemedicine. In all cases, the rules, regulations and changes in medical protocols necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic have been addressed successfully by the Coaniquem staff.
The Lloyd Baysdorfer Memorial Fund, whose sole purpose is to fund the purchase of the revolutionary new laser treatment of scar tissues, has reached it goal of raising $50,000 and the new Laser Treatment device has been ordered. This new procedure utilizes lasers to keep scar tissue more soft and pliable by creating micro-perforations in the scar; and will promote healthy tissue around and beneath it. This will speed up the recovery of the child and the possibilities of reducing scarring. See the previous report in this series for more details.
