Sri Lanka - Save 1 million lives

Sri Lanka, a country of nearly 22 million inhabitants, is facing a growing health burden related to chronic kidney disease. As described on GlobalGiving, 14 percent of the population lives with diabetes, 63,000 Sri Lankans suffer from chronic kidney disease, and roughly 6,000 patients have progressed to end-stage renal disease. Despite this overwhelming need, only 34 kidney transplants were performed in 2021, creating a huge gap between supply and demand.

DTI Foundation’s “Sri Lanka – Save 1 Million Lives” project invests in the training of one national healthcare professional through the TPM programme and a two-week clinical internship in Spain. This training equips participants with knowledge in donor identification, family communication, brain-death protocols and multidisciplinary coordination.

Once back in Sri Lanka, the trained professional can:
• enhance donation activity within their hospital
• contribute to national awareness efforts
• help implement ethical donation pathways
• serve as a reference for local medical teams

Advancing Organ and Tissue Donation in Sri Lanka to Save Lives

Over the past months, DTI Foundation has continued to work in the Sri Lanka region to promote organ and tissue donation and transplantation as a way to save and improve lives.

Through our collaboration with local healthcare professionals, institutions, and community stakeholders, we have shared knowledge, built awareness, and fostered systems that enable more people in need to receive a life-saving transplant.
