#AskHer Series: Protect Black Women

By Mercy Chikowore | Director of Communications

The Women's Foundation hosted our #AskHer "Protect Black Women" in May.  The conversation featured Erika Totten, a leading practitioner in healing, liberation and community building for Black women, Roberta Eaton, Executive Director (Interim) of DeafDAWN, Millicent Shaw Phipps, Director, Legal Programs, Ujima and Koube Ngaaje, President & CEO, DASH.
Our panelists explored the meaning of Protection, how Black women need more of it, and provided insight into how communities and organizations can work together to achieve it. Here are some highlights:
  • DAWN's community not only battles racism but phonocentrism (the belief that sounds and speech are inherently superior to, or more primary than, written language or sign language). "We want to reimagine what services look like for Black deaf survivors. Reducing turnover and burnout is a conversation we need to have too. I understand the pain Black people all over are experiencing and I imagine how that might impact a Black, deaf person," says Roberta Eaton, Executive Director (Interim) of DeafDAWN.
  • "When you have systems in place, if there are barriers to access, anything that actually prevents someone from getting to court to getting a protection order for example, that will be someone who now doesn't get one. We have all these inequities so we know that our legal systems are not procedurally fair or racially equal. I can't say we have a great system to protect Black women because sometimes Black women are actually victimized by these systems," said Millicent Shaw Phipps, Director, Legal Programs, Ujima.
  • A game-changing way of looking at 'protection' is paying people accordingly. "We challenge our funders and our community to make sure that every Black woman on our staff is paid accordingly," says Koube Ngaaje, President & CEO of DASH.
  • This sentiment from Erika Totten still reigns true: "Protect Black Women" also means identifying, unlearning and healing all the things WITHIN YOU that cause us harm."
The #AskHer series reflects The Women's Foundation's commitment to providing solutions to eliminate persistent barriers that disproportionately hinder women and girls from achieving economic security.
