Starfish Greathearts Foundation is an international charity dedicated to bringing life, hope, and opportunity to children facing hardship in South Africa. For 25 years, we've partnered with trusted community organizations, providing funding and wrap-around support that helps children thrive. Together, we ensure children get an education, healthcare, child protection services, and the strong community care every child deserves.
More than 450 children are orphaned every day in South Africa alone. A generation of children is growing up without parents or teachers, and very little hope for their future. An estimated 31% of the South African population is unemployed, almost half live below the official poverty line. Some communities are made up of a majority of children under the age of 19, many of whom live in child-headed households. 40% of reported sexual assaults are committed against children.
Starfish's mission is to care for these vulnerable children, supporting them emotionally and physically by funding local community centers, which provide a safe place to play, nutritious meals and after school support, school uniforms, shoes and stationery so that children can remain in school, anti-retroviral medication and HIV education, early childhood development for preschool children, secure homes and child protection. Starfish is making a significant impact by partnering with 29 organizations across the country, reaching over 12,000 children. For 25 years, Starfish has been working with local community organizations to change these children's lives. Starfish provides funding, direction, and training to our local partners to improve the delivery of quality, holistic care, so that more children receive immediate and sustainable support.
