Supplementing STEM with Social Emotional Learning

By Tad Kincaid | Executive Director

At the beginning of August, Kidspire launched a new program: STEM+SEL. Over 15 years of facilitating STEM education in Vietnamese institutions, we have observed that many of our students could benefit from learning to identify and regulate their emotions. So, we set out to build upon our strengths and supplement our STEM activities with social emotional learning (SEL). Our curriculum team worked hard to create an engaging 5-day curriculum that we could use to test the concept. We implemented the pilot program with a group of students in Hue, Vietnam, during a week-long STEM Camp. By using concepts of STEM - an activity that youth love! - It allowed our teachers an opportunity to introduce essential concepts of social-emotional learning. The feedback from students was largely positive, and our teaching team is returning to Ho Chi Minh City, motivated to further develop the concept by building a more comprehensive 10-week curriculum that will reach 1,000 students over the next 16 months.

Thank you for supporting Kidspire in providing essential educational programs to children growing up in institutional settings across Vietnam. We are grateful to you for helping us reach more students.

Sincerely,

Tad
