In Nigeria, 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence, with many cases unreported due to stigma and fear. This project will stage Artscape flash mobs in public spaces to spark open conversations, challenge harmful norms, and promote non-violence. Using dance, music, and visual art, the events will reach thousands in real time, with media coverage extending the message nationwide. Immediate action is needed to counter rising reports of gender-based violence since the COVID-19 lockdown.
Gender-based violence remains a serious issue in Nigeria, with 30% of women aged 15-49 having faced physical violence and 7% experiencing sexual violence. Many victims are silenced by stigma, lack of support, and fear of retaliation. Public awareness remains low, and harmful norms often justify abuse. Since 2020, cases have risen due to economic stress and social restrictions, yet prevention strategies remain underfunded and limited in public engagement.
The project will organize Artscape flash mobs in public areas, combining dance, music, and visual storytelling to challenge harmful norms and spark dialogue on gender violence. Performers will use creative scripts and audience participation to spread prevention messages. Events will be filmed and shared widely online to reach more people. Printed materials with referral contacts will be given to attendees, linking survivors to safe, confidential help channels.
Arts-based public interventions can shift attitudes by making taboo topics visible and relatable. By reaching thousands in person and many more through social media, the project can help normalize public discussion of gender violence, break the culture of silence, and promote safer behaviors. In subsequent time, this visibility may lead to stronger community pressure against abuse, increased survivor reporting, and stronger demand for local prevention and protection services.
