Saving Mothers and Newborns

Over the past three months, Whisper’s Magical Children’s Hospital and Maternity has witnessed countless moments of hope, relief, and new beginnings—all made possible because of your generosity. Every day, mothers walk through our doors frightened, exhausted, or unsure of what the next hour will bring, yet they find comfort in knowing that someone they have never met cares enough to support their journey to safety. Your kindness continues to change lives in ways that numbers alone cannot capture.

One of the clearest examples of this impact is our free emergency ambulance service. Many mothers in Uganda still face life-threatening delays simply because they cannot find transport when labour begins. But because of you, our ambulance is always ready. In the last three months, we were able to rush 62 mothers in labour from their homes and villages straight to our hospital. Some were in so much pain that they could barely speak; others feared they would deliver by the roadside. Yet each time, our team arrived, lifted them into the ambulance with reassurance, and brought them safely to our maternity ward. We also transported 18 emergency cases—mothers and very sick babies—from health centres that lacked the equipment to handle complications. For many of these families, that ambulance ride is the reason they are alive today.

Inside our maternity ward, your support continues to shine. We welcomed 47 babies into the world during this period, and behind each birth is a story. Eleven mothers arrived in critical condition—some after hours of obstructed labour and others after being turned away due to lack of resources elsewhere. Thanks to timely ambulance rescue and our dedicated medical team, every one of those mothers survived and returned home with their newborn in their arms. Their gratitude is beyond words.

Your kindness also touches the tiniest and most fragile lives. Sixteen premature babies were admitted to our neonatal unit—babies so small and weak that even breathing was a struggle. Some were referred to us because other facilities simply couldn’t help them. With oxygen, CPAP, warmth, and constant monitoring, 14 of these precious babies were able to grow stronger and go home. Their mothers often sit by the incubators whispering prayers, and when they finally hold their child without tubes or machines, tears always flow. This is the impact you create.

There were also four mothers who came to us because their older children were sick, only to unexpectedly go into labour right here at Whisper’s. Without hesitation, our team stepped in and supported them through safe deliveries—free of charge. They often tell us that if they had gone anywhere else, they would not have received such immediate care. Your generosity made that possible.

Thanks to you, we also welcomed back one of our doctors who completed a Master’s degree in Pediatrics. His improved skills are already saving newborns who come to us struggling to breathe or fighting severe infections. When he holds a recovering baby and smiles, it’s a reminder that investing in healthcare workers is just as lifesaving as the medicines and machines they use.

Uganda still faces high maternal and newborn mortality rates, and every day we meet mothers who carry the weight of that reality. Yet with your support, Whisper’s continues to be a place of safety—a place where a mother in the middle of the night can call for help and know that someone will come for her; a place where a fragile newborn can be given a second chance; a place where families find hope even in their hardest moments.

Restoring Hope at Childbirth

Every birth at Whispers is a story of hope — and often, survival. For many mothers in Uganda, childbirth still comes with fear, risk, and uncertainty. But thanks to your generous support, that story has changed through your support.

Our team continues to offer free antenatal and Lamaze classes, where mothers learn not only about childbirth but about their own strength. We’ve seen shy, nervous first-time mothers walk into these classes and leave more confident, informed, and empowered. One young mother recently told us, “I didn’t know I had a right to ask questions about my body. Whisper taught me to trust myself.”

Our free ambulance service remains a lifeline for mothers in labour, especially those in rural areas where access to transport is limited. Just last month, we received an emergency call about a mother experiencing preeclampsia — a dangerous complication that can be fatal without urgent care. Within minutes, our ambulance team was on the road. They reached her in time and rushed her to the hospital. She survived. Her baby survived. And today, they’re both thriving.

Our magical maternity team helps bring over 80 babies into the world every month — safely and with dignity. We stay by the mothers’ side through labour, delivery, and recovery. And when babies are born too early or too small, our neonatal team steps in with expert care and nurturing hands.

Your support is what makes this possible. Every donation fuels the ambulance, stocks medical supplies, and pays for the care these mothers could never afford on their own. You’re not just giving money — you’re giving mothers peace of mind, and giving babies a fighting chance.

As we look ahead, we hope to expand our reach even further — especially to more remote villages where access to healthcare is still dangerously limited. We are opening up a branch in Kampala to expand our reach.

Nine Years of Whisper's Impact

As we celebrate nine years of impact for Whisper’s Magical Children’s Hospital and Maternity, we reflect on the incredible journey we have taken to save lives and bring hope to mothers and children in Uganda.

Through your support, we have provided safe deliveries, emergency medical care, and essential maternal health services that have reduced birth-related complications and deaths. Our magical maternity has helped over 500 mothers deliver their babies safely.

One of our most remarkable moments was delivering quadruplets—a rare and high-risk case referred to us from a government hospital. It was a challenging but rewarding experience, as we ensured that both the mother and all four babies survived and received the care they needed. This is just one of many stories that prove how vital our work is in a country where too many women and children still lose their lives due to preventable complications.

Our free ambulance service has been a lifeline for expectant mothers in critical condition, ensuring that they reach our facility in time for safe deliveries. Since last year, we have transported more than 200 mothers in labour, preventing life-threatening delays that often occur due to lack of access to emergency transport. Women who once had no hope of reaching a hospital on time now have a chance to deliver safely, and many babies are alive today because of this service.

Every day, we witness the impact of our work firsthand. Sarah, a young mother from a rural village, was in prolonged labour with no access to medical care. She had lost all hope when our ambulance team arrived just in time. At Whisper’s, she underwent an emergency C-section that saved both her and her baby’s life. Today, she holds her healthy newborn with gratitude, knowing that without this support, the outcome could have been devastating.

We have seen a 40% decrease in birth-related complications among our patients and a 95% survival rate for premature babies and emergency C-section cases.

We are committed to strengthening our neonatal intensive care unit, acquiring essential equipment such as infusion pumps, and expanding our community outreach programs to educate and support more expectant mothers. We believe that no mother should have to fear for her life while giving birth, and no child should lose the chance to live simply because of inadequate healthcare.

None of this would be possible without the generosity and support of our donors. Your contributions are the reason that thousands of babies are alive today.
