Summary

The Ukrainian Ministry of Health estimates that 15 million people need psychological support as a result of the ongoing war. BKC will provide psychological help for conflict-affected families in an underfunded area of Ukraine. Many of these families are forcibly displaced people whose homes have been shelled in a blatant disregard for civilian welfare, families of Ukrainian soldiers who don't know if their loved ones will ever return home, and those raising children with disabilities.

Challenge

With millions of people experiencing psychological trauma, mental health needs are growing in Ukraine, but the severely underfunded healthcare system is unable to provide psychological help to the affected population. If people cannot access the healthcare they need, their welfare will continue declining. Thus, in Rzyshchiv, a community of 12000 members, people needing psychological support turn to the local medical centre for help, but the facility has no budget to provide these services.

Solution

Together with the Rzyshchiv Medical Centre, BKC will ensure that mental health services are available for the conflict-affected children and adults of the community to help them cope with trauma and loss. They will include providing guidance, needs-based psychological support in crisis situations, art therapy and promoting awareness about mental health. Also, selected centre personnel will undergo specialised training, enabling them to provide long-term mental healthcare within the community.

Long-Term Impact

A healthy population is one of every nation's most important assets. It means productive and thriving individuals and communities. In Ukraine, the war has caused the loss of life, damage and a steep decline in health and well-being. By helping conflict-affected members of an underfunded community cope with loss and promoting resilience after traumatic events, this project will not only benefit a community but will contribute to strengthening the health of our nation in these challenging times.
