Education for Every Child in Adaklu, Ghana

Friends of Adaklu is pleased to share an update on Bertha A. and Isabel K., students whose education is made possible thanks to your generous support.

Bertha A.

Bertha is one of the bright young students whose education is made possible through the generous support of The Academy school community.

Once a shy little girl, Bertha is now a confident grade 1 student who enjoys participating in both indoor and outdoor activities with her classmates. She is active in class, eager to learn, and is loved by her teachers for her positive attitude and growing independence.

Bertha is developing a love for reading and is often seen carrying her books. During break times, she enjoys pretending to be a teacher, sharing what she’s learned by teaching her friends.

Bertha lives in the Adaklu Dawanu community where families struggle to access safe drinking water. Families rely on the Dawa River for their water, exposing children to serious health risks and long daily walks to fetch water.

We’re deeply grateful to The Academy for organizing a Walk-a-Thon on October 23, 2025, raising funds to dig a borehole to bring clean, reliable water to Dawanu and children like Bertha.

Isabel has recently been promoted to Grade 8, following her excellent performance in the recent school examinations. She continues to distinguish herself as one of the top students in her class.

In addition to her academic achievements, Isabel holds the position of class leader, a role that reflects her leadership qualities and the respect she has of her peers. She is also a member of the Reading and Poetry Recitation Club, where she performs as a poem reciter.

Beyond the classroom, Isabel is actively involved in FOA after-school programs including the Digital Literacy Program and Nunya Village. You can view two projects she has been working on here.

Bertha now attends the Dawanu Afterschool Enrichment & Snack Program four days a week. On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, the program focuses on academic support, helping students strengthen their literacy and numeracy skills. On Sundays, she joins her peers on a special trip to Nunya Village, where she is learning to make beautiful cane beads from recycled materials.

Thanks to your generosity—and the support of The Academy’s soon-to-be 2nd grade class sponsorship—Bertha's family feels a little less financial pressure, and Bertha feels a lot more confident. Her teachers proudly report that she is becoming more social, engaged, and self-assured each week.
