The project will serve many undernourished children from poor homes who leave during school and lunch hours to the bush to search for fruits to eat, thereby missing classes and exposing them to hazards. We are Planting 100 trees in each of the 24 public primary and secondary schools in FCT to make fruits available and protect school communities from heatwave, wind and soil erosion. It will provide basic skills to students to mitigate climate change and land degradation while increasing awareness
Many of these students perform poorly during exams as they are not in school during learning hours. Among these are girls and boys who are sexually harassed on their way to look for fruits to eat, thereby affecting their mental health and ability to concentrate during learning periods. There is an increase in heat and soil erosion in the selected areas due to a lack of tree cover. The awareness around climate change and the impact of deforestation is low, making mitigation efforts difficult.
The RUWAI tree planting in schools will provide food for many underfed children from poor homes and prevent them from hazards. Students will learn tree planting, sustainable land management and other income skills to empower them economically. They are encouraged to share their knowledge with others in their various local communities.
The project will educate over 7000 students in 24 schools about climate change and deforestation impact. It will stop students from leaving the schools to search for fruits, reduce the risk of assaults among underage children, and empower them to combat poverty and carbon emissions by planting trees.
